Game 1 v. University of San Diego (9/15/12):
The Harvard Crimson opened the 2012 season with a home date against the San Diego Toreros. The Crimson were victorious 28-13 on this day as the game was rather pedestrian through three quarters before the Crimson exploded for three touchdowns to win going away.
Harvard won the toss and deferred to the second half. Mason Mills brought out the Toreros’ offense at the 16. Mills picked up two first downs on passes to Reggie Bell and Brandon White. From the Harvard 47, White connected with Kenny James down to the 40. A holding call on USD moved the ball back to midfield but Mills quickly regained the yardage on a pass to White over the middle. From the 36, Joe Ferguson then rushed up the middle for 11. On third-and-7 from the 22, Mills scrambled ahead for 5, setting up a fourth-and-2 from the 17. USD elected to go for it and Mills connected with Joe Hoekstra at the 9. Mills and Ferguson moved the ball down to the 3, where Mills’ pass intended for Colin King went incomplete after the Harvard front seven applied heavy pressure. Ernie Collins then knocked in a chip shot field goal to give the Toreros the early 3-0 lead. It was a 19-play, 81-yard drive that took nearly nine-and-a-half minutes off the clock. The Crimson started out their opening drive at the 26. Colton Chapple started at quarterback for Harvard and immediately connected with Andrew Berg for 9. Treavor Scales picked up where he left off last year by ripping off a gain of 6.  Chapple then hit Cameron Brate over the middle for 12, moving the ball to USD’s 47. The drive stalled there and Jacob Dombrowski punted out. Starting out from the 20, Mills quickly connected with White for a 22-yard gain. On second down, Mills hit Bell, who moved the ball to the Harvard 41. John Lyon then sacked Mills for a 7-yard loss. Mills’ next pass was picked off by Jack Dittmer, who moved the ball back to midfield. Chapple hit Brate, who went out of bounds for a seven-yard gain. After a five-yard penalty, Scales barreled up the middle for 11. Scales then carried down to the 32 as the quarter came to a close.
After Scales carried for three more to open the quarter, Chapple went long and deep to Brate, who took the pass in stride and carried the ball into the end zone for the touchdown. With David Mothander’s extra point, the Crimson took a 7-3 lead. The Toreros went three n’ out on their next drive as Zach Hodges sacked Mills for a seven-yard loss. On the Crimson’s ensuing drive, they were able to move the ball out to the 46, but a personal foul call on Anthony Fabiano pushed the ball back 15 yards and Dombrowski punted out. Both teams exchanged three and outs before Mills connected with Barksdale for a 14-yard gain up to the USD 45. Kenny James then rushed to the Harvard 47, but the drive stalled there and Collins punted out. The Crimson then started out at the 16, where Chapple hit Ricky Zorn for a 10-yard gain as time was winding down in the half. Scales was then hauled down for a 4-yard loss and Dombrowski punted out. The Toreros had one last chance to score and Mills led the offense out to midfield. Mills then rushed down to the 43 but his third down pass intended for Logan Smith fell incomplete and Collins punted the ball into the end zone. Chapple took a knee and the teams went into the locker room with Harvard holding a 7-3 lead.
The Crimson went three n’ out on their opening drive of the second half. The Toreros then started out from their 46, where James ripped off a 12-yard gain down to the Harvard 42. USD then moved the ball down to the 34, where they went for it on fourth-and-2. Mills connected with White for a 7-yard gain to move the chains. After a short gain, Hodges sacked Mills again for a loss of seven. From the 31, Collins rocked a 48-yard field goal to tighten things at 7-6. The Crimson again went three n’ out as there was a definite swing in momentum in the Toreros’ direction. Midway through the quarter, Mills connected with White for a first down up to the 41. Mills then quickly completed passes to Bell and Colin King and USD had the ball at the Harvard 30. USD was able to move the ball down the 14, where Lyon sacked Mills for an 11 yard loss. But on the next play, Mills launched a bolt to Smith, who carried into the end zone to give the Toreros a 13-7 lead. Seitu Smith then took the ensuing kickoff to the house but a block in the back penalty negated the touchdown and placed the ball at the Harvard 6. After Scales rushed up the middle for 10, the Crimson benefitted from a pass interference call when Chapple’s pass intended for Kyle Juszczyk was incomplete, placing the ball at the 35.
Moving into the fourth quarter, a personal foul call against USD gave Harvard another life, with the ball placed at the 45. After Chapple connected with Juszczyk for a five-yard gain, Scales rambled downfield for a 28-yard gain down to the USD 22. Scott Miller then gained 9 on a pass from Chapple. After another personal foul call on USD placed the ball at the 8, Chapple hit Juszczyk in the end zone and the Crimson went back on top 14-13. The Toreros started out from their 25, where Mills was sacked by Nnamdi Obukwelu for an 8-yard loss and the Toreros ended up punting away. The Crimson took over at midfield, where Chapple connected with Juszczyk for a 27-yard gain down to the Toreros’ 18. Chapple then took a shot into the end zone but his pass was intercepted by Joey York and USD took over at the 20. The Toreros ended up going three n’ out and punted away. The Crimson started out again at the 18. From there, Chapple connected with Zorn for 20. On the next play, Chapple found Berg, who went out of bounds at the USD 39. Scales gained five and then Chapple scrambled ahead for 16 more. From the 18, Chapple ran for 6 more. Scales then rammed it up the gut for 10, moving the ball to the 2. Two plays later, Scales banged in from the 1 and the Crimson went ahead 21-13. After both teams exchanged possessions, the Toreros got the ball back at their 20. Mills hit Ferguson, who was dragged down after a 21-yard gain. After Mills hit King for an 11-yard gain, the Toreros faced a fourth down and 7 from the Harvard 45. Mills then escaped a rush and found White for a 16-yard pickup at the 29. After a penalty moved the ball back to the 34, the Toreros faced another fourth down which they needed to convert to keep the drive alive. Mills went back to pass and faced heavy pressure from Fabiano and Hodges and his throw intended for White fell incomplete. After USD turned over the ball on downs, Scales caught everyone by surprise by rushing up the middle and going 66 yards for the touchdown that salted this one away. Down 28-13, USD had one final chance to catch up and Mills came out throwing. He was able to complete a couple of passes that moved the ball down to Harvard’s 45 before getting sacked by Reid McCann for a six-yard loss. Finally, Mills attempted a last-gasp attempt on fourth down but his pass intended for Robbie Beyer fell incomplete and the Crimson took over on downs. Chapple took a knee and the Crimson came away with a hard fought 28-13 victory.
